Licks and Promises
TN raising the subject of the election pledges, it should be remembered that the party machine, whether good, bad or indifferent, must function fundamentally on certain pledges. Within reasonable party limits, therefore, we cannot cavil at a system which we ane directly responsible for. But it is upon the broad, national, vital questions of publio concern, that we look for, and expect an absence of party manacles and shackles. It is at the point where party becomes positively sinister •m eating into individual conscience at the expense of the "greatest good for the greatest number," that we must adjust our perspective for a scrutiny of pre-election pledges. We should listen very earnestly to our politicians when they mount the hustings again.
