Old Boys' First Defeat (From "N.Z. Truth's" Oamaru Rep.) Old. Boys suffered their first reverse of the season -on Saturday, when they were defeated to the tune of 20 to 6 by Excelsior.. PONDITIONS W ere far from ideal. nevertheless a high standard of play was maintained. Excelsior dominated all departments, particularly m foiAvard .work. Jim Hopley • Avas outstanding as Aving-forward, and Avas responsible for a couple of good goals. "Brum" Williams, Clelland, Galjoway and Jones all participated m lively movements, and each notched a try. •'-.- The Excelsior rearguard put more vim into their play, particularly m the latter stage of the game, Avhen they had Old Boys hard on the defensive. , Old Boys Avere unable to get going, and OAved their total of six to ShaAv, the hardened opportunist, Avho registered a try and goaled a penalty. A ragged exhibition of the code Avas displayed i m the Maheno-Athletic game, Avhich deA'eloped into a forAvard tussle, Maheno gaining the verdict by 11 to 9.. The indefatigable Whiting was always prominent for the Avearers of the maroon, but superior AA'ork by Maheno Avore down the opposition. Waitaki sub-union staged a trial match at KuroAv on Saturday.
