- Galbraith Shield Won by Pirates (From "N.Z. Truth's" Invercargill ;■ Rep.) • The final match of the Galbraith • Shield- competition entertained a i record crowd, which enjoyed every moment of a fast, hard-fought game. . DIRAT.ISS won the decision by six points to three, the game being m duulit right to the end. Gcddes opened the bull by scoring a heady try for Pirates. .Lii ley goaled a penalty for Star, and the lirst spell ended 3 'all. The pace was a cracker and Pirates surprised everybody by keeping their forwards going right through the 90 minutes. Half-way through the latter part Diack landed a penalty for Pirates and Star .iust failed to score on two occasions. On the day the better side won. Their forwards, headed by Hazlett, Tinnock and Bird, proving too aggressive for Star to pass with scoring results. Star lost Bell, whose shin was injured, and their backs were often caught m possession. Campbell, the full-back, did a .deal of saving, but scoring seemed impossible to the backs, who generally are so resourceful. Hazlett pjayed a great game m the thick and. m loose stuff, thoroughly meriting to be classed as a New Zealand rep. R. Johnston as rover for Pirate's. was always m the picture. For Star the pack battled Ave.ll, Padget and Howden proving the most 'conspicuous. Pirates thus win the Galbraith Shield for 1927 by 3 competition points.
