NORTH ERN OAKS
Oreum Dangerous MANPANL'S RIVAL (From "Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) On her spring and Christmas form Mandane was looked upon as . a iikely winner of the Great, Northern Oaks at the Ellerslie autumn meeting. .. Since then, howevei", there has loomed up a most dangerous rival m Oreum. Her Woodville and Napier Cup victories over a mile, and a quarter course are fresh m the mind, and she is entitled to respect if for no other reason than that she ;an claim that great mare Desert Gold as her dam. By those who should know best, it is claimed that Oreum was not tiring of the distance when she won the races mentioned. That being- so, there is a tendency to make T. EL Lowry's filly quite as firm a selection as Mandane for the classic event of Saturday next. The fact that Oreum's dam won the race m her year and that Roy Reed is to ride her, will not prejudice her prospects of success. The public invariably favor recent promising form. While Oreum was winning, Mandane was m temporary retirement, though the racing the latter indulged m at Rangitikei last week should serve to bring her back to form. The pair look like making the strongest bids for the honors at > the right pnd of a mile and a half. * Of the others, Holymond and Catcall cannot be written out. Lomint, Queen Arch, Anklet and Judge's Boi;: all possess some pace. They have not however, given any great indication that they will stay the distance. = Some surprise victories have been registered m connection with the G;N. Oaks, but it looks like either Oreum or Mandane doing the trick this time.
