STEWARDS' POWERS
Not Strong Enough WILL CONFERENCE ACT? (From "Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) Following .on our remarks about the inactivity regarding certain doubtful doings at the Waikato Racing Club's autumn fixture, there may be some justification m calling for the appointment of a regular board of paid stewards to hear disputes. It is well known that some clubs are apt to treat matters which come under their notice too leniently at times. The time is ripening when the mat--1 ter of dealing with those prepared to take ■ risks should be left entirely to capable paid experts who are not likely to fear or favor anyone. "Truth" does not suggest that '.here should not be a higher board tp appeal to m case of harsh treatment, but it feels' that the paid stipendiary stewards acting- m New Zealand today have not sufficient powers allotted them. The Conference might do well if it realised the true position. The Metropolitan meetings appear to be m ordeV, but ' at some of the secondary and minor gatherings things happen at times bearing the doubtful tinge. It is wrong, and if some country clubs could only hear the dissatisfaction expressed m racing circles as to the apparent inconsistent doings tci.nt are allowed to pass without murmur of any kind, they themselves would be astounded.
