Archdeacon Julius, of Timaru, returning from a trip to England, discoursed to a reporter on "the amount of unemployment m England." A T- the same time, he was "much **■ struck with the backbone of the workers m the North of England " It is difficult to be struck with the backbone of the worker unless he is hard bent over solid toil, so it has to be presumed that the Archdeacon saw some work going on somewhere. The only other way m which he could have been struck with the worker's backbone rests on some improbable basis of hypothesis, such as a worker falling out of an aeroplane while the reverend gentleman was underneath it. The balance of evidence seems to be that the worker's back is as much bent as it always has been right down the ages. But is the back of the clergy bent The spectacle of sleek shepherds tending starving sheep is too often a feature of the theological world. But this is said quite without prejudice to the Archdeacon, who may be a shinhi"exception, for all "Truth" knows
