AUCKLAND'S GREAT BEGINNING.
Record Opening Stand.
The opening partnership of Anthony and. HorspQOl, while more dogged than brilliant, was a' record for Auckland and produced 201 m. just on three and a half hours. Anthony, was always about 2O.ahead- of his partner and was much more at ease than Horsppol, especially, when McGirr was trundling. But both batsmen can be said to have broken the back of the attack -and the six bowlers tried by Collins could : not shift; the pair. It fell to Hiddleston to dissolve the partiiership, and coming on just before closing time he got both Anthony and. Horspool before he .had sent down seven overs. Horspool had 89 and played well for them, while Anthony's century clear was a meritorious performance. The, second wicket fell at 221; two short of half Wellington's score and the only other playr' ers to offer serious; resistance were Garrard arid Pbstles/' who together' added 71 to the score. * Garrard got 44
by bright cricket and although he had two lives his .play was of the sort that spectators relish. The innings terminated just at 5 o'clock, 97 behind Wellington's 443.
