Tables Turned on Wellington.

After a match extending over four days, m which the tide of battle ebbed and flowed m a remarkable manner, Auckland dispelled any hopes Wellington may have had' of participating further m the Plunket Shield contest. After compiling the highly respectable total of 443 m the first innings the southerners seemed m a very comfortable position". A first wicket stand, however, by Auckland produced half that number, when the adjournment was made on Saturday. Monday saw a change come over • the seene 1 by a breakdown m the weather which completely transformed the wicket. For a time it was to.o sodden to favor the bowlers, but later improved and. Auckland's innings closed for 97 runs short of their opponents' total. Then Wellington went to the crease, but found thq attack m deadly form, and the whole side, with the exception of Hiddleston,; was routed) the innings adding only 75 to the first .total. Auck--sland was left with 172 to get on a wicket which was more to the liking of the trundler than the batsman; Their innings was of the see-saw nature, the batting of Horspool, Dacre and Smith, who showed a venturesome spirit without totally discarding discretion, turning defeat to victory. - Auckland, ultimately ran out the.necessary.runs. with three wickets m hand; v ; '■><■ --'■;■ :,- , .'■■> •■;
