Though Royal Star is well treated over seven furlongs at Ashburton on the first day, he is too slow a beginner to be considered dangerous. He will be more at home over a mile and a quarter the second day. Counterstroke is m great buckle, and his track work suggests he will be mighty hard to beat at AshburtonSome Kid has been hitting out m tip-top style, and a race should soon come his way. Falstaff. and Kauwhero were responsible for a useful once round over the hurdles on Saturday. Kauwhero is a good track horse, but on the day Falstaff will probably be found the better of the pair. A. D. Mclvor, who used to train W. Stone's horses at Invercargill, has been appointed starter at the spring meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club. This is a preliminary to a permanent appointment. Martis is a smart galloper, but during the week she sustained a slight injury to one of her. heels. In all probability she will be a runner at Ashburton, but it is questionable if she is forward enough to win. Economist lightened up a lot after his National efforts, and despite the easiest of tasks, he still resembles a girl'' going 1 to her first ball. Since being operated upon for wind troubles, Headlong stays a whole lot better. He may require a race to sharpen him up before being considered for an investment. Palestrina has put on a lot of condition. She is a grass mare, and it will take a lot of work to get her ready for racing. Wharfdale will only have to .be sad- , died up at Ashburton to be favorite.
. Golden Prince has got through some, solid work, but has not done anything to write .home about. Scrimmage is bowling along m great style- ; It is only a question of 'her keeping sound to win a race or two. The- speedy youngster, Distant Shot, jarred a joint recently, and has been eased m her work.
