THE EMPRESS.
Hope Hampton adds new laurels to her already splendid reputation as an emotional actress m "Love's Penalty" at the Empress Theatre, due In great part to the broad scope given her for the display of her remarkable histrionic ability. Seldom' has a story been written which makes such calls upon the talent of the leading char-' acter m it, but because "Love's Penalty" does, and because Hope Hampton is able to respond m splendid manner to every demand, the production is one of the best which has been shown m months m this city. Miss Hampton has the ■ role of Miss Janis Clayton. Sallie Clayton, a younger sister, is a suicide, on the day her employer, who has forgotten her m love, is married to another. The moither dies a week after the tragedy, yand nearly crazed by the double bereavement, Janls swears vtengeance. Her revenge, the way she makes opportunity for its achievement, and the dramatic intervention of fate which makes it useless, combine to make one of the most dramatic stories which has been contained m r.creen offerings -for the season. Percy Marmont plays the leading male role. Also on the bill is "The Charming Deceiver;" with Alice Calhoun. This is the story of a girl whose marriage must be kept secret that happiness may come into the lives of others.
