TROTTING
CANTERBURY NOTES.
(By "Silenus.")
The Canterbury horses that competed at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting cost local punters some g-ood money, as not one of them paid a dividend. ' The Geo. M. Patchin gelding, Sunrise, was sold at Tattersall's recently j for forty guineas, Mr. W. G. Doyle being the purchaser. Dillon Eddy and Lucy Wallace are doing sound work, and m their sprint- | ing tasks move very freely. M. Edwards is giving- Craibwood plenty of good strong work, and the ancient one is thriving on it. Jean Logan and Gay Wilkes, two of Free Holmes's team, are showing improved form on the tracks. Bundura rattles through her work m great style and loses no time over her 1% mile tasks, which are always fast. Beeswing, driven by M. Edwards, hits out freely m her work. She is both looking and going well. G. Anderson is putting a lot of work into Saints Bell, and the three-year-old son of Logan Pointer is well forward. J. Cockrell worked out Agathos over two miles the other day, and left it behind m 4,39. Frank Tracy assisted him over the last mile, and both finished up their tasks very well. Sympathy was too good for Vice Admiral m a fast work-out over 1% mile., The time was easily the best of the morning. Last week I-luon Drift, who is fast returning to form, showed a lot of speed m a dash over I^4 miles. Rearguard has done a lot of work, and W. Smith has him looking really well. Nelson Bengin is . improving every day, and left two miles behind him on Saturday week m the moat convincing style.
C. James has an addition to his team m the shape of a two-year-old by Nelson Bengin — Bertha Bell (imp.) He belongs to a sport at Akaroa. When returning home from the track on Saturday week, Dillon Eddy stumbled and fell, cutting both his knees. The accident is most unfortunate as it is almost certain to prevent him from racing at Addington. Lord Rose, who won the principal event on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, is an aged gelding by St. Elmo, and is owned by Mr. K. K. Smith, of Belfast (Christchurch), but trained m Auckland. In a run over 1% mile, Trix Pointer always had Pax's measure. The imported mare is on the improve and will be hard to beat m the Cup. Old Electrocute, m J. Wright's charge, is getting through good strong work and looks nice and bright. Earl Derby is on the improve and gets through his work m fine style. Bundong goes well m saddle and is getting through good work on the tracks. At Addington last week Emperor, who goes well m harness, rattled over 1% mile at top, assisted by Florrie Dillon (saddle), the former's showing was the best. Simple Peter is , getting through his work well, and is improving daily. When doing an easy task recently. Willie Lincoln struck himself and has since been m the hands of the vet. The injury is of such a nature as to leave little chance of the gelding fulfilling his New Zealand- Trotting Cup engagements. This is very unfortunate, as he would have been hard to shake off over the last half mile. The brood mares, Evelyn and Silver Princess, have both had foals to Brent Locanda and visit him again. Among others booked to visit Brent Locanda are Country Belle, winner of the 1915 ! Trotting Cup, and Thelma, one of the best brood mares m the Dominion. F. Hickinbottom visited Addington recently and worked his Driftwood — Wild Rose gelding, and Wee Bell. They both went fast 'over one and a 'half mile and showed a good turn of speed. Erin's Queen, m Fleming's stable, is m great heart and doing all that is asked of her. Barring accidents, she is a sure starter m the New Zealand Trotting Cup. After a few months spell, Frandocia has been put m work again by W. Smith, and as he comes on quickly he should be soon ready for early engagements. The committee of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association, m their annual report record with regret the death of Mr. J. Brankin, who was a member of the Association for many years. H. Norman is keeping the pacer Milesande hard at work on the Heathcote track, and the horse is doing and going very well. R. Hart has several promising maiden pacers m work on the Heathcote track. Abbey Chimes is getting through sound work at Addington, and has improved a lot lately. J. Moody has m hand a more than useful pacer by 0.V.M., from that speedy mare Maid of the Forest. | The pacer Daydrift, has improved m his work a lot of late. The pacing mare Eileen is getting i through her .tasks well at Addington. The pacer Peter Mac, is doing good work at Belfast, and he may come back .to his best form. Mykot, also trained at Belfast, is doing good work and may be taken to Auckland this month. Harold Devon, who has had a long spell is to be taken up again on the return of K. H. Smith from the West Coast. Peter McMillan, who was m a bad way a while back, is to be given a good spell.
