CANTERBURY CHAT

(By "Silenus.")

.Murray Hobbs intended sending Tortrix and Flight Commander to the Wellington meeting, but the former went a little sore and McGettrell decided to leave the pair at home. Triboulet Is the name claimed for the Kilbroney — Postland Lass colt m Hobbs's stable. He looks like making one out of the ordinary. Balefire and Castillen, the pair of three-year-olds m Fred. Christmas's stable, hardened up on the Dunedin trip and both look well now. Wartone (Warslip's foal) is a sweet little mover and goes fast m the paddock.

■. Fabisco, whom R. Emerson has only lately been sending along, is quickly getting into form. Miss Mimic is very well treated m the Stewards with only 7.3. She won the last Champion Stakes beating among others Warplane and Surveyor. Wrestler is amiss and not likely to' stand another preparation. Brackenfield, who spread-eagled the field m his only start at the National [ meeting, will have plenty of supporters for the Stewards Handicap. He is already on the scene. Kilbrogan came on from Ashburton and is m work at Riccarton under his owner. He never looked better, but is a regular loafer on the track tho' quite the reverse with the colors up. Onslaught is sprinting well on the tracks, but may not be quite ready for the Stewards Handicap as he has not been up very long and will be better for a race or two. La Paix is the name claimed for the Bengonian Peace filly m Hobbs's stable. She goes fast but ia as green as grass. Gamecock occasionally shows fits of temper m his morning work, and when m this mood it takes a lot of persuading to get him near the track. He looks well. Winter Wind regularly skips over four furlongs without the least concern between 48 and 49 seconds. Heathercote is improving every day. The race at Ashburton did him a lot of good. He does not stay too well. Foo Chow has furnished nicely, and is going well on the tracks. Wardancer will be raced m the Welters at the Cup meeting. Aynsley intended running him the. second day' at Dunedin, but the person he commissioned *to do the acceptance met with an accident on the way m to Dunedin and was too late to make the payment. Gay Lad ran a great 1& miles at Riccarton on Tuesday of last week. He reeled the furlongs off at the rate of 12% and cut out the first five m 1.3 2-5. He was picked up four furlongs from home by a companion and would certainly have run 2.8 had the boy riding him not lost both his irons two furlongs from home and from there out was trying to pull him up. On a heavy plough he ran 2.9 2-5. Cerberus is galloping well now, having got over the injury to the ligament If Longly gets a good light boy on him m the Stewards he will run a good race, though probably he is hardly class enough. Faftrinade, m R. Emerson's team, gets sour at times and leads his rider a dance. He is a great bucker, and none of the jocks rush to ride him work, but as is often the case he goes fast on the tracks. G. Murray-Aynsley has again taken m the chestnut filly Reproachful who, as the result of a kick, has been having an easy time. Almoner and Eleus came on from Ashburton and will train at Riccarton till after the Cup meeting. A short let up would not hurt them. Two of Mr. H. A. Knight's brood mares, Comely and Marsinah, have chestnut colt foals to Clarenceux. Mr. G. B. Starky's brood mare, Prudish, dam of Varnish and, Mustard Pot, who was on a visit to Absurd, died last week. Bore has been taken m hand again by F. D. Jones and will bo prepared for hurdle racing later on m the season. Beautiful weather, a fast track, a record attendance and good racing at Rangiora on Monday. After Mythology and Golden Crozier had made all the running, I>. Cotton dashed up on Red Pool and just won the Fernside Hack Handicap. Heads only separated the placed horses. Nantville was sent out screaming for the Trial Plate, five furlongs, but after having every chance Foo Chow caught and beat her on the post. In the Cup, Some Kid, attended by Melee, led to the turn where the pair ran off the course and Kilmoon slipped up on the rails gaining several lengths. Once straightened up, Melee came again and won on the post by a head. The Melee at Rangiora and the Melee at Dunedin were very different horses. Kilmoon looked well, and the race will do him a lot of good. Wardancer, who ■had the apprentice allowance, could not foot it with the leaders at any stage of the journey. Orange Bitters and Strathglass who represent very strong stables, carried a lot of money m the Oxford Hack Handicap. Aljidus and Sans Souci got the best of the kick out, and the latter who has beaten Some Kid m his work won easily and paid a good price. The judge hoisted the number of St. Winnow on top but a howl from the crowd made him readjust the placings. In the Open Sprint Theatius had a big break at the home turn and Onslaught had to fairly fly m the straight to get up and win. Aided by a good start which took him and Pyjama away from the field Killowen, who looks nice, won the six furlongs m convincing- style
