CANTERBURY CHAT
(By "Silenus.")
Golden Prince jumped well, and won the second Hurdles at Ashburton from end to end. "Vociferate was very sore the second day at Ashburton, and was pulled up six furlongs from home. **, Might Commander, who got a rough passage the first day, won the Fairfield Hack at Ashburton m good style. Frank Gray, who rode Link Up the first day at Ashburton, was ill, and C. Emmerson was put up the second day. Mackie,- the rider of North. Sea, was fined £2 for interfering with Starlight m the Fairfleld Hack. He should have been fined £20 for the way he handled his mount from the turn home. The races won by Tortrix and Flight Commander were the first stake money Mr. E. S. Liuttrell has received for 18 months. Narova, a member of F. D. Jones's team, ran a real good race m the Maiden Hack. Eight Bells was very sore at Ashburton. Sweet Smile, . whom Jack Pearson has had a lot of trouble with, ran a good race m the Maiden Hack at AsTiburton. .Royal" Star won the Goldstream Welter like a good horse, but with half-a-dozen more strides All Ready would have won. Mythology is a hardy customer, and won the second Hack Welter m good style. Strathglass, who ran second m the Hack Welter, is one of the ch'okebore team, and was last to leave the peg. The Farewell Handicap produced one of the finest finishes ever seen on a racecourse. Twenty yards from the post Kilbrogan, Some Kid, Braid and Moorabbe were m a line with Radial, trying to squeeze through, and as they flashed past the post it was impossible to say which horse had won. The judge placed Kilbrogan, Some Kid, Moorabbe and Braid separated by half -heads only, with Radial (who was well back at the turn) a head away fifth. Anyone who saw the running the first day could not possibly back Kilbrogan with bad money, as he finished" over 100 yards behind Bon Spec, Braid and Moorabbe, but the weights for the Stewards' Handicap appeared the morning of the second day, and there is no penalty. Mr. C. Sheath, one of the organisers of the Jockeys' Association, laid his views before a large number of well--known racing men when at Christchurch, and m almost every case the people approached hold that the association is certainly a step m the right direction, and will be a benefit to all concerned.
