TROTTING

CANTERBURY NOTES,

(By "Silenus.") ' Acceptances for the Greymouth T;C. Spring meeting 1 close on October 30. Mr. R. M. Mortin has sold the speedy pacer General Wilkes to Mr. W. Taylor, of Bundaberg, Queensland. Culverdin and Lord Agapanthus, who are to race at the Greymouth meeting, are doing good work. Sceptre, who has a record of 4.47 for two miles has produced a filly to the imported sire, Great Audubon. Saint's Belle, who has developed into a very attractive pacer, is getting through sound work. The veteran trotter Electrocute has again been placed m J. Wright's hands to be prepared for future engagements. <! Coalfield and Emperor, who are both looking very well, are getting through solid' work. Though Winal is looking m the rough, he is getting through good work. Albert Cling has so far done all that has been asked of him. The recent wet weather at Oamaru has been all against fast work. Albert' Cling will be given a race at Oamaru on Labor Day, when some hint as . to his Cup prospects may be gathered. Red Heather, who is decidedly on the big side, is getting through useful work. Trix Pointer is going well on the tracks, and the imported i«.ire- neverlooked better.

The Oamaru trainer, J. Hinderson, has a large team m work at present. It includes Tommy C, Albert Cling, j Embracer, Sashwood, and several ! promising maidens. Agathos spun over a mile and a-half on Tuesday m his very beat style, and is right at the top of his form. Mr. J. C. Whiteman has disposed 6f Adonis to Mr. A. _B. TewkesbuTy, a well-known trotting enthusiast, of Temora, New South Wales. The action of the Railway Department m requiring a guarantee of 60 i horses before supplying a special train for the Oamaru Trotting Club's spring j meeting, was severely criticised m trotting circles. . Not half that num- | ber of Canterbury horses are engaged at the meeting. . Win Soon, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup of 1914, has'- foaled to Harold Rothschild. As both sire and dam were fast, the youngster should turn out useful. The West Coast owner-trainer, V. Alboin, has a strong team m work on his private- track at, Mahgahua 'Junction. It includes May Patch, ■ Woodland Rose, Never Will, Dixie Lee, Wee Winnie and Capewelh l Some of the above will be racing at the coming Greymouth . meeting. I The trotter Gay Wilkes and Jean Logan are going well m their work. Bryce had several of his large team at Addington last week, but the star work was a, mile and a-half work out, m which. Matchlight and Cathedral Chimes essayed to give Admiral Wood and Emilius (Bryoe, the driver) two seconds' start. The trial was a real good one, the four horses finishing almost together. They are all looking very well. ! / ■■■■-■ Just, afterwards High Admiral and his three-year-old trotter went over the same Journey, both giving satisfaction. .**"*■..■ Huon Drift is fast getting into form/ and recently C. James sent him along for almost 1% miles, which he left behind very well. • . Lord Derby is improving, and makes few mistakes now) I. Atkinson trains. liim. . ' : Rema, Rosa and Cameos are to be mated with Nelson Bengi'n. • First Carbine was sent out on even j money proposition for the Selriia Trot of 1% miles m a field of 13 at Ashburton. He began very well, kept the fence, never lifted, and, m a desperate finish over the last two furlongs with Tanekaha, both being under the whip, he won by a half- head. The drivers of MedalHous, General Pershing, arid Lucy Patch are heavy enough to be driving road waggons. Harrison, who drove the latter (the lightest of the starters) must be 16 stone. • : ■ The writer will apologise to any of the drivers at Ashburton. if there were more than three triers m any race. More than half of them were pulling off before they had gone aquarter of a mile; ; • ' „; . Rockaway, a black horse of J. R. Corrigan's, trained by, Andy. Pringle, looks a likely sort. Wildbriar tro.tted evenly right through, and while some of the others were tugging and pulling their horses up R. McDonnell just strolled along and got the odd fives for third. The dates for the Forbirry Park Spring meeting originally fixed for November 27 and 29 have been. altered to November 28 and 29. '. "Stipe" T. H. Davy will do Auckland and Greymouth, and Mr. C. Piper the Oamaru' fixture. Peter Mako, a son. of Peter the Great (2.7 1-5), imported from, America by Mr. W. G. Bright, of' Auckland, has .arrived m New Zealand, and after completing his period m quarantine, will take up stud duties m the North.; • — • " • Mako Mako. has been doing a bit of sprinting over short courses. He should be ready for the Christmas meeting's. ' ' •• ~ *••-.•' ■

If ever a moral went out m a trot, -. it was Childwood m the.Melrose Handicap on the second day at Ashburton.- Why the racing clubs put these trots on <their programmes it is hard to understand. It was one of the greatest farces ever witnessed, Childwood just jogging along always from 75 to 100 yards m front, nothing making an effort to trouble him. At the, distance several hflrses were deliber-' ately, pulled up, and Leewood almost walked past the post for second. . . ft"
