WELLINGTON RACES TO-DAY.
Th*e Spring meeting of the above club will open to-day and will conclude on Monday.
The fields are on the big side, and the card is a most attractive one with all ;the events bearing an open appearance. • *
Racing will commence with the Seatoun Handicap, 7 furlongs. There is an acceptance of eighteen, and the majority of them will go to the post. Recent form makes out Bonnie Heathar, Flight Commander and Warlike to have chances. The trio named have all won at their last starts, as has another 'useful sort m Royal Exchange. Racing seems to be improving Flight Commander, and such a well-bred one should » have no difficulty m getting to the end of seven furlongs.
The Taita Handicap, four furlongs, is for two-year-olds. Avondale form suggests Caricature and Napier form Fortune Teller as likely to run well, while All Cerise, Tropical and Gate Pah can all muster up a good bit of pace.
The Wainui Handicap, one mile, will see several ' New Zealand Cup horses m action, and a victory will nbt entail any increased poundage for the big Riccartori event. Vagabond, Hurry Up and Hindi appear to be a likely lot.
If reserved for the Rimutaka- Handicap, one mile, the improving Bonnie Heather will be favorite. He may encounter most opposition from the wellbred Moutoa Ivanova and Tortrix. The Foxton mare has run several good races m open company of late, while Tortrix was a winner at Ashburton.
The big handicap appears to be an open race, but there is little doubt that after her good showing at Opaki Red Ribbon will be favorite. Others likely to be m the market are Kilrush, the bracketed pair, Hetaua and Maiora and the three-year-olds Lucid and Motuihi. The last-named finished very well m the Wanganui Guineas.
T?he Wellesley Stakes will see youngsters from all parts of the Dominion m action. Saima, who is a very' quick beginner, will be favorite with Weary Willie also enjoying a big following.
There are some smart hacks m the October Handicap, which looks very, open. The favorite will doubtless be Sweet Memory, a -dual winner at Opaki last week.
T ; he Shorts Handicap will-be a pro--blem for punters. With the C. J.C. Stewards' Handicap coming on .fox .deci-r sign there will doubtless, be a- few of the runners out for practice, -but too. much attention" should not be, given to; this phase' of the qUestiph as ' .riders nowadays are not prone to take too many l-Jslcs, and the usual. -sv r ay to do ihei-business is .to put up ah inexperionced apprentice who will get lost m the 1 shuffle. Tprfreda,. TiKritij'a. and Ermine are three with chances.
