JOCKEYS' ASSOCIATION.

A Jockeys' Association, with Mr. C. Sheath, of Auckland, as secretary, has been formed and registered, and its ranks comprise fill the leading horsemen m the Domi^ i. The aim of the association is t generally improve matters cbnnecteu with the turf, but more especially the conditions of Jockeys. All who know the game at all will admit that the jockey is m most cases the one 1 that has to stand the brick being thrown. This is* not as it should be, and the association is out to alter it. Instead of the jockey being always pushed to one side, he is now to be treated more as a man, One of the first demands the association will ask for will be a fifty per cent, increaa« m all feos, and it will also ask that, m pig races such as the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, the rider of the placed horaes should receive a proportion of the prize-money m addition to his losing fee. The association intends to assist the authorities to cleanse the turf, and. providing it goes about the matter m a proper way, no'fthe Will say aught but that there is room for it. and the authorities should welcome its formation. The secretary is a well-known business man, and his. association with the new body .should be a sufficient guarantee to all that everything will be as the platform sets out} A deputation- from the association met the president of the Racing Conference last week, but nothing is known as to how it was recSived tho elsewhere the deputation was received With ©very courteßy.
