WOWSERS HIT TO LEG
On Monday, Mr. Ernest Davis,,-. of the Licensed Victuallers' Associatibn, gave a knock to those wowsers who are using dea.th and disease to. air their bitterness against the liquor^ tradje. This gentleman told the press that the trade had no desire to open the bars and perfiaps, thereby, spread infection. The trade was keenly desirous of stamping out the disease, and they were not only willing to close up, but they were prepared to assist the sick. And he closed by getting- one m on the Health authorities by pointing- out that they should close all places where people congregate. The outspokenness of Mr. Davis won publio commendation, because it is recognised that many of those who are shouting at thle liquor sellers are owners of pestitential premises rented to the poor, and which are the breeding grounds for diseases of the type now devastating Auckland. As a prominjent Labor worker put it: "If the Health officers were to put firesticks m some of Auckland's shacks, they would be doing better work." He closed his remarks thus: "It is the heads tlhat are losing ttieir heads."
