Since the world began the apple has been a temptation to many. The latest to fall are two popular members pf a London battalion of Kitchener's Army. Together with the rest of their com-, pany, they were returning from a week ln the trenches, and, espying an apple tree laden with luscious fruit directly overhead, our two warriors, without pausing to think, jumped out of the communication trench and went up the tree like lightning. But scarcely had they Commenced to fill their pockets 1 when a swishing sound like rain was heard through the top leaves. Looking up. -they discovered it v - wasn't rain, but bullets from a'German machine gun. Their fall back into the trench was a quick one, but luckily they escaped unhurt. ,
