CANTERBURY CHAT

(By "The Looker- On.")

The Amberley Racing Club does not intend having any steeplechases on Its programme this year, and m consequence the meeting will not be 1 held until late In September. The Bracken-, tleld Hunt Club has' a totallsator permit for the coming season, and. they will hold a steeplechase meeting on the Amberley Club»' course either late m July or early m August. All War is going to make a good fencer. For a green one, he gets over the obstacles fast and cleverly. ; ' Kilroeny does not take very kindly to big fences. He Is a doubtful starter at Wtngatul. / Thrax has rejoined McGrath's team. The big Martian gelding Is look-, Ing sound and well though something m the rough, and is to be got, ready for spring racing. Martius is galloping well, and if the going keeps right he will take all sorts of beating m one or two races before he gets to the end of the Oamaru and Dunedin meetings. C. Emerson is working hard to try and head off O'Sbea for the premiership amongst the horsemen. Lbngley left with Art for Wanganul last Thursday. The little bay is very well, and is «ure to run a good rft<se m the Century Hurdles. Silent Way is now a member of M. Hobba's team, haying been purchased by Mr. C. Studholme to take over to Melbourne as a companion to Reval. Dick Emerson has not got a very large team, but they, are all fairly forward just now. Reval is getting into shape again, ana on looks Ib a much sounder horse than he has been for a long time. He Is a useful sprinter, but is not by any means a champion and to race successfully the Finland gelding should have gone to Australia before winning the Easter, as the handlcappers are sure to crush him now. Pomb is an improving horse, and he will have to be very unlucky if he doesn't pay his way at the Oamaru and Punedln meetings, Oratonu is a nice Jumper, but he has not got a great amount of pace. Still, jumping is what is wanted at Wingatui. Mr. Duncan Rutherford's team for Wanganul left last Thursday m charge of Smith. Daylight Bill, Mescal and Freo will carry their owner's colors at Wanganui and Hastings. It is just as well that a battier doesn't own them, for their chances of paying expenses look very remote. Banian is back m Longloy's stable. The big gelding never looked m better health m his life, and another attempt to get him to jump hurdles is to be made. . If Thannhauser gets through the Oamaru and Otakl meetings without going wrong, he will be given a course of schooling over hurdles. Both he and Thrax are being paddock trained nowadays. Hap Dha wtw given a school over two of the big hurdles lost week, and though he looked inclined to shirk the second one he gave quite a satisfactory display, being very fast over each obstacle. liore Is doing well, and he should give a pood account of himself while uwuy South. F. D. Jones has a very useful team In his stable,, and 'at present they are all both looking and gointf well. Ych should race woll m the sprint races down South. The shorter the journey the better for him. Te Ahftu Is now an Inmate of 11. Ellls's stable. This m an unshapely Ally though she can gallop fairly fast. It

is necessary to use a crupper on her to stop the saddle from getting on to her neck, and c breastplate to stop it slipping over her tail. Samisen does not seem to Improve m stamina.; She still possesses speed, but cannot go far. Daytime looks a shade on the jolly side, and a race or two should do him much good. He is engaged m seven and eight furlong races down South, which will probably be too far for him. Recorder is expected to race well next time out. - .- — .- . . ■ '■ ' '.■- & ■'• ■ ' "■;- ■ - Bellshlre has been an expensive horse to follow this season; though -well down m the weights he doesn't seem able to win. . . ■.' , ■ - . '■ ■'. ..•.- ._■- Ardmore must have recovered from bleeding at Easter time, as he is to be raced at Oamaru. If everything is right with him the big fellow will be very hard to beat. : , ; Peg does not like jumping, and it is very doubtful if she will ever be any g-ood over hurdles, Marc Anthony is doing gentle.exercise, just sufficient to keep him In good health. Peronilla Is looking well, and must be given a good chance of paying her way In the sprints down South. This is a great galloper m mud. Christmas keeps old Cornet pegging along, but it looks as if the old fellow has lost all his dash. *» The hurdler Commotion, who has not raced for some time, will be seen out once more at the Oamaru and Dunedin meetings. .'. ; Seamaid, who hails from somewhere up the Cl'utha Valley, is expected to run well m the welter races down South. Margerine Is quite as good a mare now as she was at Ashburton. ■
