> Dave -Smith- v. Jimmy Clabby.

Australian -Outed after Eighty Seconds,

Says Reforce Beat -Him.

i (Special "to

There' was a time m Sydney when hardly any . other boxing was talked afcout i>ut the Smith-Clabby duels, and they deserved that amount of notice/ because they were tip-top goes of .the highest; class. They took place daring Clabbys two previous visits to ' Australia, and these were/ the result^: January 17, 1911, twenty rounds, won by Smith; December 9, 1911. twenty rounds, draw; ' February 24, 1912, twenty rounds, draw. . ' - Any fool could therefore predict a brg crowd at the Stadium on Saturday night last, when these two historic opponents mat once again. Altogether 13.0W) fight fans rolled up. The fight, or what thete was of it, must go down m, fls#c history as one of the most sensational as well as one of' the most unsatisfactory affairs staged m Australia. It was all over m 80 seconds. Both men were warned by Referee Fred Baker against hitting m the break. As they hung on to each other, Smith, Instead of defending himself, appealed to the referee; whereupon Clabby whipped over his left to Dave's point and he dropped down arid out . So flabbergasted was Referee Baker that he forgot to count, and Dave lay m the dust for 26 seconds before he patted Clabbyf s head and declared him the winner. Besides flabbergasting the referee, the suddenness of it all paralysed the crowd and they forgot to cheer. There was no demonstration at all. Afterwards, Dave Smith declared he would never enter the ring again. He considered that the referee had -beaten him.
