♦ New Picture Theatre for Thorndon. An abridged prospectus of the above company is published in this issue. The company is being formed for the purpose of erecting an up-to-date picture theatre and concert hall on the corner of Molesworth-street and Syd-ney-street, opposite the Parliamentary grounds. Plans have been prepared by Mr. James Rennie. The ground floor is planned so that a concrete chamber 68ft. by 42ft is given. It will have total seating accommodation for 750 persons, including the circle, which will seat 200 persons. It will have an up-to-date stage, 42ft. by 20ft. The floor will be specially suitable for dancing. The chamber will have practically the whole of the front facing Molesworthstreet designed to exits, so that it could be emptied within two minutes. There will also be a large supperroom, 63ft by 18ft, with kitchen conveniences, ladies' and gentlemen's cloak-rooms, sitting-out rooms, committee rooms, dressing rooms, etc. The whole of the interior will be finished in decorative plaster work. The first floor, with entrance from Sydney-street, is designed as a picture theatre and will be one of the most up-to-date yet erected in the Dominion. A wide, open court leads to the auditorium, 80ft by 51ft; a separate entrance gives access to a large dress circle. The theatre will have luxurious upholstered tip-up seats of the latest pattern, and will seat about 1000 persons. The building will also contain two shops and a tea-room, 26ft by 26ft. The whole building will be absolutely fire-proof. On the corner of Sydney-street and Molesworth-street will be a handsome circular tower, 83ft high, which will be specially illuminated during the evenings. A large stage has been provided, which will facilitate the adoption of all improvements to the picture business. The site of the theatre is an ideal one, as a double frontage not only allows the utmost use to be made of the whole area, but permits of both entrances and exits to each street. The advantage of this from the point of view of safety in the event of fire or panic from any cause is obvious. All other picture theatres in Wellington are situated south of the "Evening Post" office, so that the proposed building will cater for a very extensive and populous area. It is right on the Molesworth-street and Lambton-quay tram lines. The Karori, Tinakori-road, Wadestown and Northland trams pass the door. In addition, it will serve Wellington-ter-race, the whole of Thorndon, and the suburbs along tho Manawatu and Wairarapa railway lines. Being a corner site, and particularly well situated, immediately opposite the beautiful grounds of the Parliamentary Buildings, it can never be shut in or be at a disadvantage as regards light and prominence. The inevitable growth and prosperity of Wellington City must, it is claimed, make this ine site an asset of ever-increasing value. Messrs. Wm. H. Turnbull and Co. are the brokers for the company, and will be pleased to post prospectuses on application. They advise us that a large number of shares have already been applied for, and that successful flotation is assured.
