Woman Roasted Alive. (From "Truth's" Christchurch Rep). The death of Jane Veitch, the wife of Thos. Veitch, of Christchurch, was the subject of an inquest conducted before Mr. H. W. Bishop, District Coroner, at the Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday last, prom the evidence adduced it seems that Mr. and Mrs. Veitch had breakfast on Sunday morning, after which ' the husband went back to bed, and his wife sat by the fire- An hour later when Veitch I saw smoke coming into the bedroom he rushed into the kitchen and found his wife lying on the floor m flames. She was not subject to fits, but had had a small nobbier of whisky that morning, and apparently did not cry out when her clothes caught fire. Dr. Scott, medical superintendent at the hospital, said that when the deceased was admitted to the institution on Sunday afternoon she was suffering from burns ori the chest, head, arms and abdomen. She was then m a critical condition, and without rallying diejjj at 6.30 p.m. from shock following on her injuries. A verdict of accidental death was returned, the Coroner remarking that ho could not understand why the deceased had not. cried out when the accident happened.
