MUSTN'T JOKE.
The inadvisability of indulging m. jocular remarks while on the bench was forcibly demonstrated to Dr. A. McArthur, "S.M., a few days ago. While at Aucklaud recently, the genial doctor, sitting on the llaUway Appeal Board, jocularly remarked that unless it were shown that a particular debtor were m receipt of at least £4 a week, he would not entertain a judgment summons, lne circumstances ot the .particular case induced him to make this remark, more by way of quiet humor than otherwise, and was not understood by those who heard him to lay down a general principle. Unfortunately, the remark got into cold, print, which has not the means of indicating the doctor's wink and smile, and a South Island magistrate is now found to have refused an order, because the judgment debtor was not m receipt of Jil a week, "following a precedent laid down by Dr. McArthur, S.M."
