Manawatu Boxing Association is after Arthur Kelly and Sailor Duffy.
Len Porter and Patto were scheduled to have scrapped m Sydney last Monday night.
The Manawatu . Association is considering a heavy-weight . go for the championship of the Dominion.
Gus Devitt is m Victoria claiming the welter championship. He may yet be matched with Mark Higgins aflO.lo.
A special attraction at the Westport tourney will be the return go between those clever youngsters, M'offit and O'Neill.
Why doesn't some enterprising Association put on an "elimination" series for the purpose of discovering the champion feather-weight of the Dominion ?
Something doing m Sydney. Bill Rudd and Percy Hale were recently requested to meet and talk. Probably the two New Zealanders will shortly come to blows. On past results, Rudd will go under.
There's a possibility of Jack Smith and Jim Mitchell mixing it at Millerton. Smith has been asked his terms and requests a £75 purse. Smith couldn't stand being dubbed "a skite" by Mich., so just you bet things will hum if they meet.
From Jim Mitchell :— Kindly allow me place m your valuable paper to reply to Sandow's challenge, which I accept. Sandow says that if' I did not accept his challenge he 1 would claim the title. Perhaps he does not know that I issued an open challenge to anyone m New Zealand)
It is interesting to know that most of the successful exponents of the padded glove m Australia during the past two years are New Zealanders. I refer to such men as Jim- Griffm, Billy Elliott, Dave Smith, Percy Hale, Gus Devttt, Jack Clarke and Bill Rudd.
In losing the services of Mr W. H. (Ford) Hankins, the Manawatu Boxing Association has lost a most efficient secretary. The present' position of the Association is due to Ford's business-like capacity. The Association recognised the fact at its annual meeting, as Ford, for services rendered, was made a life member.
The Waipukurau Boxing Association holds its first tournament en June 7 next. The chief item is the professional contest between "Gnat" Williams and Lou O'Halloran. There are a number of amateur bouts m the bantam, feather, middle, and heavy-weight divisions. Some great slogs are anticipated.
A feature, and a good one, of the recent Dunedin tournament was the barring of the kidney punch and the discouragement of the / persistent clincher. Referee Rube Cook announced that both these parties would be frowned upon, and he lived up to his announcement. Most of the talent couldn't use the kidney punch anyhow.
Having whipped Bill Rudd at Brisbane, Ted Whiting is now m Melbourne, where he will shortly take on, for the second time, our own Gus Devitt. Gus went under, on points, to Whiting, some, time back, but wasn't satisfied. Dave Smith claims a victory over Whiting m thirteen rounds. Ted is a hard nut' to crack, and, on the results, Bill Rudd would hardly have it all his own way with Gus Devitt.
Ike Fake's name is not mentioned m the list of the Manawatu Boxing Association's committeemen, and as I notice that for valuable services rendered, Ike has been elected a life member, "Second" presumes that the popular referee has retired from active service. This is much to be regretted. Fake is a capable referee, and m losing his services the Association has set itself a task to get an official capable of filling Ike's shoes.
