PETFORD'S PREDICAMENT.
William Petford,^ a well-known plumber arid coppersmith, strolled into the dock at Auckland Police Court on Monday, charged with being drunk and using swear words m Karangahape-road on the previous Saturday night. Petford admitted imbibing hops, but said he was unable to remember the language, as he was riot addicted to that beastly habit. . Constable Riley swore that She street was crowded, and that Petford persistently yelled out words only to be seen on the blue charge sheet, and complaint was made to him before arrest was made. Magistrate Cutten viewed the language with aversion, and fined the penitent Petford a fiver, or, m the alternative 14 days m the Hotel de Poynton. William paid the penalty, and, on leaving the court, stuck his hat jauntily on his head.
