SIX MONTHS HARD.

Running the Cnjter.

William 1 John Hamilton, who looked just the thing, was charged before Mr E. C. Cut-ten, S.M., at the Auckland Court on Monday with being a rogue and a vagabond. .He pleaded "not guilty," and accused the police of having a set on him. He arrived at Auc&iand as a stowaway on the Rarawa on March 3, for which offence he was awarded seven days' hard. On his release, he wandered into a house of assignation, m Newton, where according to pplice evidence, his occupation has been that of bludger, who, m his {spare moments, "ran the cutter" for the occupants oi the bagnio. Asked if he desired to cross-examine the boys m blue, he replied, "It's not a bit of use to ask questions ; they bump against a misfortunate, and he ain't got no chance." Hamilton pleaded for clemency, promising to get out of the city if given "another chance." . The Magistrate attributed his trouble to .drink, and, therefore, decided to impose just half the penalty he had intended to impose. "William looked hopeful again, but, when he was sentenced to a sixer, fehe old woeful look on his countenance was intensified, and he seemed too preoccupied to leave the dock till caught hold of by the outside guard of the Black Maria pen. * .
