SINCLAIR STOPPED.

Henry Sinclair, alias Cosgrove, charged with stealing a portmanteau and contents from the Wayerley Hotel, Auckland, was alternatively charged, with receiving the goods, knowing them to be stolen. Accused was undefended.

Arthur Barron, schoolmaster at Jermyn Bay, North Canterbury, deposed that while on his holidays he stayed at the Waverley Hotel, and his portmanteau was stolen. ."•'•■

. Harold TomHnson, luggage porter at the Central railway station, gave evidence as to two men depositing xhe portmanteau. He gave tickets for the bags, bat could not . recognise the accused. A< fellow porter (McLeod; stated that he was asked by accused and another man two days later for the bags. They identified them, and while talking a constable came and the two-men left with him.

Constable W. H. Rogers arrested accused and a man named James at the luggage room. On the way to the station James ran away and has not been found since. . - ■■>„.• '
