PAROCHIAL PETTINESS.

"Truth" has always, been m favor of anything liable to increase the military efficiency of the youth of New Zealand, but. it has also invariably been against anything anything savoring of parechialism or any other form of narrow-minded-ness. If anybody donated £200 to help on the cause of national defence, "Truth" would give him a pat on the back ; but if m the giving of the sum he allowed his parochial bias to stick out, "Truth" wouldn't take the trouble to say anything about him unless it was to make uncomplimentary remarks. For these seasons not much of a complimentary nature can be said about Lieut.-Col. R. Heaton Rhodes, M.P. for EHesmere, who has endeavored to pander to the parish pomp people m the most parochial manner. He has offered ' to give the Governors of Canterbury College an annual subsidy of £200 towards the support of a chair of -military science, but he's not prepared to give it like a man who's prepared to encourage military efficiency and 'trast" the cost. Not him. He wants to be sure that his money will be spent m the vieinrty of his particular parish pump. He demands that if the governors [take bis gonce tne chair at Canterbury College must be the only one established m the Dominion. The offer is very interesting, as showing the spirit which actuates- the people who would sit on the ripht hand of W, F. Massey if he happened to get into power.
