For some weeks past the larger motor launches have been undergoing overhaul, trial trips, and examination, m readiness for the ocean race over a 53-knot coarse for a trophy consisting of a silver tea and coffee service, valued' at £80, presented by Mr W. J. Proud, of Sydney, and five other prizes presented by the association. The race -was confined to cruisers of not less than 30 feet m length. Handicaps were allowed at the start, which took place from Queen-street wharf at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Of the fourteen entrants, twelve faced the starter, the Marore (97min.) leaving at 9 a.m. precisely, followed at intervals up to 10.37. a.m., when Seabreeze, the scratch boat, crossed the line, Tie weather was fair, a north-easter blowing, and the sea outside sufficiently rough to give the crews of the launches a good pairing up. . The whole of the boats finished (with the exception of the Virginia, which had an accident m her engine-room abreast of North Head, where she retired, and Seabreeze, the scratch boat, did splendidly till her engines broke down off Tiri lighthouse). The first to finish was W. R. Twiggs* Sibyl (9ml*.), 4hrs, 6rain, 7sec, followed by D. Reid's Buffalo Bill (61min), 4hrs lOmin 45sec. lone (45rain) being third, and finishing at 4brs 21min 50sec. The actual time occupied by the winner m covering the course was Sbxs 38mm 7 sec, a splendid performance. The race was an excellent test, both tor reliability and speed, and so numerous are the power launches becoming that; they threaten to acquire; the popularity so long enjoyed by the wttite-winged fleet of Waitemata Harbor.
