ST. JAMES 11 v. WELLINGTON 82
Played at the Polo Ground— an interesting game somewhat spoilt by the gale. Jimmies had the best of the game, but defending against the wind m the first spell had hard work to do to keep the Yellows out. * The winners were attacking during the whole of the second spell and' Just managed to get the winning score tan minutes before time. St. James forvnds played with plenty of dash and towards the end had things all their own way. The opposing scrummers made the most of every opportunity with the breeze behind them and made some determined rushes but failed to make much headway after the oranges had been disposed of. "Am" Wilson was m the thick of the fray all the time. Smythe worked hard.
Paul and Fernandos did a fair share of graft. Bridge (wing) was only fair. j Wellington backs threw the ball about to advantage, but often made the mistake of crowding the wing-three-quarters on to the line. Carr (until disabled late m the game) and Drury made some fast dashes. Malfroy at half opened up the play nicely, and JSellars did fairly well. His "goal was a hummer. Bruce ami Tyler were the best of the Red forwards, the former's two tries be- , ing splendid individual efforts. Sullivan, i a promoted third-class boy and a younger of the "Sullivan" lootbaii family, played his first senior game and did very well. Hoave was consistent and scored a good try. Wright on the wing used his feet to advantage. The Roberts Brothers, Crewes and I Baumgart were the most prominent m the winners' rearguard. They are a fast set, but the strong wind prevented accurate passing. Kitto was played wing three-quarter. He is inclined to wander, but with a little practice would do well m the position. He lost a certain try through not being on hand to take a pass from Crewes when almost over. Thomas, at full-back, played well against the wind and placed a "bonsor" goal.
