TAPPING THE TIPSTERS.
The season of -the year has come round when ingenuous yofuth begins to plague those who are supposed, m the language of the turf, to "know something" to give him tips for races. A rooted idea is entertained by many foolish people that the name of tire horse which is certain to win a race is known to a number of persons, who, if they please, can supply tho "tip." Were this so, it need scarcely be said that certain exceedingly knowing men, who are to be met year after year m the. betting ring, would have abandoned the practice of going to uninteresting races m bad weather, for their fortunes would have been made long ago. At the present 'moment a dozen owners arc, no doubt, confident that Uhey- will win the Cup or Stewards' Handicap, and among their friends tips accumulate ; but It is tolerably obvious that the great majority of the dozen will prove to have been wrong. Tips for all big races are, it need scarcely be said, as plentiful as blackhei> ries. The Miing is to find the right one, and no one can ever make sure of this till Judge Hartgill has had his say m the matter.
