SCOTT'S SPRUIK.
The Wandering Willies Return*
By the Wairimoo, whi;h arrived last Wednesday w^sk, Bill Sco.tty Wellington's leading mctalliuian, returned from his travels m Horsetralia. Bill, who took his wife (whose health , for some time past has not been of the best) for a sea" journey on ' : medical advice, records the pleasing, intelligence that Mrs Scott lias greatly benefited by the change. = It was really a partnership r.ffur as FarcVner. Harry . Marti:: dnle and h s lettir ball al?o crcs^d the Tasman. It was quite ai family out n;r, and being •'ihiiocints abroad" the quartette proved at formidable" camliinrition against the Australian Jnaj, sman who is ever on the look-out for shy-lcorbinpr strangers to unload'a clever bit of fiction', anent a 'Wealthy relative' sojourning somewhere m one of the innumerable islands of th^e Southern Pacific. However, Bill Avent over for his own pleasure, business was not. on element cf the trip, and thus, as a wandering sightseer his impressions of sport generally-' m Australia should prove very acccptal.ls to my numerous readers. In his two months' peregrinations of the great sporting States of the Common wealih, viz., N;S. Wales and V'ictnria, Scotty could hardly fail to i;6ti'e that m so far as racecourses ale concerned, those States are fat aluiad of New Zealand. He saw all the racecourses, both " registered and unregistered, and thinks that of Victoria Park is out ,on its own. The firm were at Moprefield and saw the N.Z. pony Frederick clean up the best of them in' tie Flying Handicap, affer being left at the post. Then at Tattersall's meeting m Sydney they saw Pelkeo Win. tbe Ka'wson Stakes m record time. The wittner is a half-brother to -Eli tiank, who usetk to he a member of. the Poritua team, ami is by Medallion. Scotty thinks N.Z. owners of jumping hors's should confine their attention to Sydney when traveling from bomb, as the jumping, events there' are very easy to win. At 'Tattersall's meeting the flat races were >all run m pfoenoimnally fast times, proving thnt the going v.'as good, yet the winner of the hurdles took 3.55 to run two miles. A thing that impressed the visitors greats ly was the excellence of the starting m | Sydney anil Melbourne. Both Messrs Watson and McKellar. are past masters at the art of despatching the field. On the whole, the racing is much cleaner m Australia than m .the Dominion; and it is a common thing to see eighty per cent, of the field backed for good money. The N.Z. horses now m Sydney have made a good impression, and are sure to do well, but Mobltan is . regarded by Scott as a class above any of our representatives. Scott pushed on to Wanganui. as soon as his boat arrived, and was roariig out the- odds at the top of his Voice both : on Thursday an,d Satur-. day. •''.-■'
