THE AWFUL MAC.

John McLaughlan's Slangwidge.

Uohn McLaughlan, who has been several times presented at Court, made, anoj&et appearance at Magistrate Riddell's recep* tion on Tuesday for the purpose of explaining the meaning of Slangwidge he h&l used the previous evening m Oustoi».House Wuay. Mr T. A. Peterkin, who is" the pro»I possessor of the title of Mayor of Lowes Hutt, doncherknow, mentioned to the att> ent one that he had occasion to listea to McLaughlan's eloquence the prarioatf day and was so impressed with it tha* 1m thought , it was the finest flow of Slaag' widge ever heard. Asked to repeat th» slangwidge the autocrat of Lower Hutt became indignant at the thought of such a suggestion, which amounted to sacri-* lege — the very idea of expecting the civic head, be all and end all, of Lower Hutt to use such impressive adjectives. The Mayor, however, stated that he distinct* ly remembered the expressions used by, John McLaughlan and CONSENTED TO WRITE THE WORDS down on a piece of paper, and did so to some effect. The slangwidge was handed up to the silent one and it moved~"nim to describe the specimen produced as most obscene and disgusting; "Truth's" religious reporter had a look air the specimen reproduced by the Mayor of Lower Hutt, and was horrified at its obscenity? and felt positively unclean afterwards. Cop McKay also gave evidence of hay* ing heard the McLaughlan person uso unparliamentary expressions, whilst m a, state of intoxication. Magistrate Riddety was shocked at McLaughlan's horriW* English, and fined him ten bob for baing drunk, and ordered him to take up resl^ dence at the Terrace retreat for fourteen days, where he will be provided with tucker and gentle exercise.
