THE CHAMPION MEAN MAN.

A Bank-manager's Mangy Mongering.

One of the worst cases of meanness that this pap en has - ever heard . of comes to hand from Forty Mile Bush. It happened at Christmas time. Seems, that a Palmerston North firm , who do a good business through the Wairarapa and northwards, sent a ham«per along at Christmas time to their friends. In the • particular township to which this paper refers a hamner was sent to the postmaster, with a letter stating "for yourself and staff." There was also a few bob enclosed for the telegraph boys. That was all right. The hamper was divided up and the money distributed and everybody m the P.O. voted the firm "decent," and drank their health with enthusiasm , which was quite right and proper at that drinky periqd. But another hamner was sent to a bank-manager of the same town, with the same instructions, "for yourself AND STAFF." Now, this particular bank manager happens to be a person who shoves the plate round on Sunday, and professes to be a saint "enerally. What did lie do with the hamper ? Did he show a Christian spirit and pass it on to the staff, or did he m his Christian wrath, as what might have been construed into a bribe, send it back with a scornful letter? No, he didn't. He took it home and save his' personal friends a good blow out, and they all voted him a generous and* gianthearted "sort of cuss. Unf ortunat? lv for the manager the staff happened to get hold of the letter this firm sent with the hamper, and underlining the words, "and. staff," thW ploced the letter on the manao^r's desk. So far this paper hasn't heard of j>nvbod- getting the sack, but if that bank-manager doesn't feel the smallest and meanest >, man on earth he had a hide thicker than the Wainui water before the rain.
