WICKED WINTER.

•*■ An Oriental Bay Episode. Is He a Sex Maniac? Edward Winter is a person apparently about thirty-five, whom the Wellington police hope to prove a criminal sex maniac. He is now under arrest on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl of nine years, named. Thelma Bailey, duaghter of Bailey, of Br'anigan and Bailey, boat-builders, Baleena Bay, which is m the vicinity of Oriental Bay. On Thursday, 19th, Winter was seen watching some little girls who. were bathing m scanty apparel' m the • surf; and a ; gentleman, cognisant of the fact that Winter had not long been liberated from gaol after serving a sentence for interfering with a girl child, watched the lecherous animal for a solid hour. It was not until the following day that the offence happened. The girl was sitting on a seat, and Winter gave her a shilling to get 3d worth of lollies. The child did so and handed back 9d .change. An act of indecency was next witnessed by two boys, who were given some of the lollies. WINTER WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ARRESTED by "fee Rawles, and on Tuesday morning Chief Detective McGrath applied for a remand till Wednesday, 29th instant. Solicitor Jackson, for the defence, offered no objection, but applied for bail, and Winter was asked to. fine one surety of £50, or two of £25. If this offence is proved it will be shown: that Winter has a penchant for fiddling with little girls. Last year some youthful maidens were swinging under the trees on Cambridge Terrace, when Winter committM a similar indecency. A peculiar feature of the affair was the fact that he was identified by means of an unusual lamp attached to his bicycle. This had a flag on it, and the witnesses recognised it when it was produced by the police.
