MORE EMBEZZLEIENT.

CAPTAIN THOMAS BIFFED OUT.

Aooflier City Council Affair.

Another City Council- employee has gone wrong, and there is not going to be any prosecution, though the fact that there . has been an embezzlement was kept very quiet. The man gone wrong is Captain Ebon J. Thomas, of the Engineer's staff. He is a pal of Town Clerk Palmer, and it is Palmer who got him ' the job. Thomas' peculations were not very extensive,, as '.the. sum stolen is something like £6. -It seems that Thomias got on a bender some time ago, and then pounped on the pelf. The- auditors discovered ' something wrong, and Thomas was suspended, and subseque'ntlv sacked. Of Thomas, lots of things have .been said, and the air has been thick with tumors of another Peddar case. This, however j is not so. Thomas wasn't given, any chance, he. was sacked after investigations were 'made. Thomas m some quarters was popular. In others he was cordially detested. He was receiving £250 per annum. ' and had been employed for four years or more, and whether the fact is a curious one or otherwise, it seems he built a house at Berhampore recently. How he did it on his screw isn't- exactly known, but sowr nasty things have beeri. said about Thomas' connection with successful Council contractors. There might be nothing m the assertions ; still, where one act of dishonesty is proved, there is no telling what may happen. Thomas was a captain of some sort, and is said to have been a naval paymaster m his timq. and was connected with the paying .of Australian contingents to the Boer War. Whatever Thomas was, he is not now a Council employee, and that's all about it.
