Auckland is suffering the penalty of handing its tramways over to a boodle-'in&lqing syndicate. When a public service is municipally owned, all measures that should be taken for the safety of the public are taken, but m Auckland everything is sacrificed to the Almighty ; dollar. Accord-* ing to member Poole, a very unde birable state of things exists m connection with the tram service of the red-haired city' of the Dominion. Recently an emergency brake refused to act, and the driver declined to work the car again. The foreman gave tlie car a trial and the brake again retused to act ; yet tbe driver was severely reprimanded for his obstinacy. A foreman was recently^ censured for the fracinancy of'his reports about inefficient cars, and Poole read a few instances from a long Jist of cases where iv ; "»-ics had been sustained by employees through the unworkaftleness of the anuliances. .
