THE BEST THREE-YEAR-OLDS
Gold Crest and Elevation.
Opinions differ as to which is the best of this pair of three-year-olds. Personalia speaking I incline' to Gold Crest, and am of the opinion that he will always finish m front of Elevation m w.f.a.' events. He is such a fine qolt and is more up to Derby weight than. Mr Bidwell's colt, who has, however, shown himself to be a colt of exceptional merit up to a certain distance. Here I must sound a discordant note, though I may be quite wrong, and that is that Elevation always appears: Vto me to be suffering from a slight lameness m the shoulder, or it may be chronic rheumatism, but who, will deny that he always walks a bit • short. His owner, and also his trainer, have probably discussed this matter many times, and; apparently treat it lightly, but there it is, though if it is rheumatism it may wear off .. . My advice to backers is wait for the day and see if he goes on alright. : Regarding GGolfd f Crest I cannot find anything wrong with him, and have always said that 1 he was; a' good colt who can both sprint and stay. He is a great big striding horse, and on a fine day should be a most comfortable mount. His owner, Mr J. R. McDonald, of Levin, is to be congratulated on ' his good .judgment m picking out the -son of Gold Reef when a yearling. His pedigree makes interesting reading, being by Gold Reef (imp.) from Nymph, who was out of Woodnymph, a full-sister to the Musket horse Martini Henry. Nymph belongs to Messrs Douglas Bros., of Tet. Mahanga, and it is i strange how this good mare got so few chances of showing her worth at the stud. She was mated with Quilt no end of times and always got: rubblish, but the only time she went to Gold Reef she threw that good horse Gold Crown. After this one would have thought that Gold . Reef was her partner "for life, but no, Torpedo and San Fran were sent : along, and eventually the most successful nick was tried, again, and this: beautiful chestnut is the result. L can never understand anybody using Quilt as a sire. Barring Mahutonga, admittedly a splendid galloper,' I can think of nothing Quilt ever got. that was worth feeding.
Gold Crest's near classic engagements include the C.J.C Derby and the A.R.C Derby, both of which I expect him to win.
