An Explanation. TO THE EDITOR.' Sir,— On my arrival here yesterday I noticed a paragraph m your issue of 18th inst., casting unwarranted reflections upon Sir Joseph .and Lady Ward m connection with the Chinese question. The information supplied to, you is entirely untrue, and proves that the "shilling" spy is certainly not the most reliable .source of information for a paper of the standing of ."Truth," of which I am a frequent reader, although resident at the other end of the 'island. The explanation asked for of the incident referred to m your paragraph of 12th is as. follows : My •wife (who is a sister of Lady Ward, and sometimes taken for her owing to family likeness) was driving with Lady Ward on the occasion referred to. and asked Lady Ward to put her down at the Chinese 'Shop m Manners-street, where my wife wished to purchase a roll of certain silk, which: I understand, is not procurable elsewhere. My wife made her purchase, which cost £1 9s. Lady Ward purchased absolutely nothing.
