The report' presented at tHe annual meeting of the Marylebone Club showed that the membership m 1906 was 5077, of which 370 held life membership. The new president is Lord Loreburn, the Lord Chancellor* 11. Q. Schwarz, who distinguished himself by taking six wickets for 11 and ,7 lor 29 for the South Africans against Northampton, was a member of the South African team which visited England m 1904, when lie took 96 wickets for 1422 runs, an average of 14.81, In the big match at Lord's (against an English eleven) he fairly puzzled Rafcjitsinfoji, and got him out m both, innings. In this match Schwarz scored 102 and 26. During the tour of the M.C.C. team m South Africa) 1905-6, Schwarz took 18 wickets for 310 runs, an average of 17.22. ' Sam. Woods' testimonial consisted of an illuminated testimonial, mas-: sively Jramcd, and £1620 m subscriptions. The sum of £370 was handed to him and £1250 has been invested for his benefit.' You see, they do these things well m England. . Commenting on Mackay's accident at Capetown' a Sydney scribe is mov«d to express, himself thus :--"T<here was a time when men of far less ability m every way would have had far more done for them m the way of giving them a start or position m business. But that it would appear that patriotism or pride of country is becoming an expiring virtue, or limited to a very narrow groove, with men of wealth and high position m this state."
