. Dunedin has no proper place to accommodate people suffering from diseases of an infectious nature, and occasionally it happens that such a patient is taken into the general hospital, although thds is against the by-laws of that institution. According; to the law, the hospital can be compelled to take m oE otherwise provide for infectious disease patients, but it' is not right that such cases should be admitted, endangering the lives of perhaps hundreds of others. The Charitable Aid Board is supposed to have m view the providing of an infectious diseases hospital down alt Pelichet Bay, but at present it looks as if it will be tw& or three years yet before that Board really wakes up to the urgent necessity of the hospital and gets to work. There is absolutely nothing to prevent it making an immediate start with the building. Of course people shouldn't prig, but shop-keepers tempt them to do so, and, then there is grumbling. Why should these sellers of shoddy and sundries place their wares right outside the footpath for people to handle, and then to place underneath their coats, or their jackets, or into that notorious receptacle for stolen goods, the family pram ? There is a strong consensus of opinion against these footpath displays, and some Magistrates aren't inclined to treat offenders against property with the slightest degree of harshness. A young fellow named Bert Walker was admiring a pair of foot ornaments outside David Stock's. window at Christchurch t'other day. They were worth half a guinea, and looked it, too. So Bertie, thinking they would fit him as any respectable corn-wrap should fit him, collared the pair, and did a guy, But he never learned to sprint, and he was collared by an attendant m two shakes, and then ? policeman collared him, and things weren't too good. A quid or a weewas the punishment ; the shopmakei 'iPt his faVcments back, and they are no doubt hung up to dry outside I the window againA
