'Joe Taylor, Consulting Geologist! and Mining Engineer, Universal Institute, Nelson, who has been giv" ing scientific lectures m the Spiritualistic Church, Christchurch, usedto be a parson. And he looks it.
Rosebery, another of the crowned failures (bar racing) has had another snub. Glasgow University; wanted none of Man as provost. Even the Jew money he married can't buy for Mm the places he courts,: but is incompetent to win or to hold.
Sergeant Bird, of Chrietchurch^ doesn't often smile, not when pn> duty, anyhow. . He may wrinkle tea face mirthfully m his own time, but even that is doubtful.. There is a sort of graveyard air about Bird which makes him something- of • at modern Knight of the Sorrowful Figure. .
Charles Verner, who is' now playing at His Majesty's;. Wellington, says that : Andrew Mack was a pupil of his m America m the days thai have gone 'by. It's pretty hard on Oharles, anyhow, that jhe should open 'm Wellington against so much opposition. - That's one of the dangers of taking m pupils.
Among the recent appointments of Justices of the Peace appears tho name of Mr. C. A. Griffiths,, the local auctioneer. Charlie is the only Wellingtonian favoured on this occasion, and no doubt feels his responsibilities pressing heavily won him. Should he ever return to Fiji the knowledge of the law will probably prove useful to him. ' ■ • . '« • -* ..
; The chief officer of one of the Union Company's boats is a fair terror to eat. He had a bet recently witty a fellow pflSigfer'" thaft ., he'd 4at tweaty dozen oysters, and he won. But apparently this wr&s only an . ap^* petiser , for he took" his place at dinneu as usual only a short while- .alter, arid^ 'went through a menu ,of soups, entree, lamb and pork, blanc mange and jelly, and then "-finished uw with aix apples and a glass of water. * ». . * The Captain Grogan mentioned m a recent cable message as having been sentenced, to imprisonment m West- Africa for flogging negroes, i* well known m New Zealand, • particularly Napier. He- is a son-in-law, of Mr. J. H. Coleman, and first achieved fame TVy reason of his -intrepid' tour from the Cape tp Cairo. Whilst on a visit to New Zealand some years ago he strongly advocated the introduction of big game.
Moses Love, who lives at Picton has a bright future before him. Being only a youth Mo. is a beauty m bis way, and when, the other day, a large shark was espied swimming near the shore a>t Picton with more pluck than caution Moses dived underneath the monster* arid grabbed it round the tail. After an exciting Struggle, Mo. -succeeded m dragging the fish, which is said to be- an exceptionally large one, into shallow water, and with the assistance of his companions, landed it high .and dry on* the fcpach",. where it was killed. Oh, Moses!
Mr. D. Robertson, the new secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, his risen rabidly m that department, and seems to have been very fortunate m t^e way vacancies have been opened before him. In , the present instance, Mr. J. K. Logan would probably have been chosen to «fill the position, but for t^be fact that he is not by any irearis a departmental n v an. As regards the supervision of telegraph wires," picking up broken cables and the like there is no more rap^ble man than Mr. Logon, hut m the matter of bossina; the department something more is required,, ami. Donald has according.lv ,been chosen. The latter was making ready for a t to the Old Country next month to (Oiisult specialists regarding his hearin. 1 ". but his travelling arrangement's have now been cancelled. ..•■;.
That motor cycle maniac, William Barnard Rhodes Moorhouse, who killed little Frederick Kenneth Gourlay, aged seven years and eight months on New Brighton 'beach, will have to stand his trial for manslaughter m five weeks' time. Moorhouse is a I:eardless youth, who isn't long out from the Old Country, and is related to Dr. Moorhouse, the well- | lenown Christchurch medico, and other equally well-known persons. The doctor went bail foT the yqunesster, who >didn'-t seem at all affected by the unenviable position he cceunied when before the Magistrate, the sum being fixed at £100. The father of the deceased boy, Arthur Lansdown Gourlav. is a draper's assistant, and he admitted m the box when questioned by Mr. Wildintr, who anpeared for ;the accused, that MoorJiouse had acted m a sympathetic and honorable manner m every way. From which it mw be inferred thpt the narents of the deceased have been compensated for their sad loss.
