But was Fluent to the Clerks.
Wee Chong, like most of his race, is a cheeky, cunning Chow, whw fancies if he "no savee's" every time he comes into conflict with the law everything will g0 hj s way . , Last Monday, Wee Chong, who is a fruiterer, was billed to appear at the Magistrate's Court, before Mr Riddell, S.M., on a- charge of having failed to comply with an order from ths Labor Department commanding him to furnish returns of his establishment m connection with tbe hands employed, etc., etc.^ Mr Wilford, wh» appeared for the Celestial, pleaded guilty on his behalf, and explain? 4 that the "hay then" could not speak a word of English, and when he p-ot the notice from the Department hs thought it was some qiiack pill and potion advertisement, and being a collector of such stuck it on the file, with the rest, and never thought any more about it. I Mr Findlay, who prosecuted, said ithat as far as Wee Chong's Fngiish*peaking abilities were concerned he mad shown a knowledge o( tne ian=malge by advising the clerks m tlie Depiartment to go to hell. FThough it did not transpire m evidence, it seems that Wee Chong is vlpry fluent, . and after receiving his si&mmons he went to the Departrmn. aiid there told the clerks pretty well wßiat he thought of them and called thlem all sorts of blanky cows. JLnyhow, for mistaking the paper fo* a pill testimonial, Wee Chong wals fined £3 with costs amounting to I £3 14s
