The prisoners m Santiago Gaol were attending service and singing a hymn when the earthquake, occurred and killed 140 of them. What a howl there would have been from the wowsers if these 140 had. been attending a prize fight !

Some three months ago £120 was stolen from a railway guard's van between River ton and Otautau, but investigation failed to elucidate , the mystery. The whole of the money has now been found concealed at the root of a tree, near the Thornbury station. Owing to the strict watch kept by the police the thief apparieaitlv got no chance to remove it. I (to far no arrest has been made.
