NOT A VAGRANT.
CURIOUS CASE OF CASSIDY.
Chief Justice Quashes the Conviction.
The appeal of James Cassidy against, a conviction of being an idle and disorderly person without lawful means .of support, recorded against him by Dr. McArthur, S.M., thres weeks ago, was heard by the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court, yesterday afternoon, when, without calling on defendant's counsel, his Honor upheM the appeal and quashed the conviction.
When Cassidy was- arrested he had the sum of £61 m his possession. However, the Magistrate held that the possession of suoh a sum was not means of support, but the Chief Justice said that m his opinion, unless it was proved that the man had got the money dishonestly, it was no matter for consideration how he got it, and it was impossible for such a conviction to lie.
Cassidy was therefore discharged from his own. bond of £50, and was escorted from. Court by a crowd of congratulatory friends.
