CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The Forthcoming Contests.
The^Amateiur Boxing Championships-: of New Zealand, which are to ,be ' contested at the Opera House on August 9 and 10 next, promise to eclipse 1 anything of the sort yet held anywhere m New- Zealand.' Being under the auspices of the Wellington Boxing Association that body, is leaving no stone unturned to make the contests worth travelling miles to witness. All arrangements are almost completed and it is easily anticipated that ,the theatre will be packed on both evenings. A committee of experts has ,been appointed to rig the ring and carry the carnival out properly. There will be but limited seating accommodation on the stage, but what is not taken up by, members and hon. members will be available for patrons at 7s 6d a, chair each night. It is expected, that there will be a great gathering of New Zealand sports, and. Mr Coffey, the secretary of the Association, is responsible for the statement tha^ many representative citizens from all over the colony have', signified their intention to he- presen-t; i His Excellency th^e Governor and Sir .Joseph Ward have promised to attend so that the contests will not lack the natronage of the elite, and the general public can be assured that nothing will be left undone to ensure their comfort and provide sport of a high class. As a final reminder to intending contestants, Mr Cpffey wishes us to : point out that entries close on Monday evening , next at Batkin*s, Lamb-ton-quay. The entries are likely to be fairly numerous, and Tim Tracy promises some pocket surprises m the novices under his charge. Ben Tracey is suire to enter for the Bantam Championship, and as Watson, of Christchurch is m Wellington, it is of course to be presumed that he has his eye on the coveted title of Bantam Champion; and, if he competes, the "go" between he and Ben Tracey is sure to be a . willing one, should they meet ; but the Auckland representative, Ward; is to be counted with. The Association has been promised the services of Mr Balfour Neill, of Dunedin, as sole referee, and has decided, very properly, to dp away with the silly system of having two umpires as well. ; A word of seasonable caution may be tendered to entrants and seconds m the matter of costume. The W.B.A. insists that all seconds must appear m suitable garb, white sweaters and ducks being preferable. Those who are entitled to free tickets of admission will be able to ontain the same at Batkin's. Foe further information those interested may be referred to the advertisement elsewhere. The secretary of the local Association was advised on Wednesday by Mr W. Pickles (hon. sec. of the South Canterbury Boxing Association) that A. Tresize (feather, weight) and J. Robortsoh (heavy weight) would represent the Ashburton body at the colonial tourney. Mr Pickles also expressed his best wishes for a successful meeting. ' ,
