MOW LEE'S LITTLE MOVE
Stands Him Fi' Pong an' Costee ; Oh Cli!
The Inspectors under the Shops and Offices Act have, ever since that enactment became law, experienced great difficulty m impressing upon the Mongolian that he is just as amenable to the Law as the white-skinned European. In fact such is the case .anywhere m Australasia where such ! .an Act. is in* operation. Even fines, and heavy ones at that, have been imposed on the Chinaman for bireaches of the Act, but still tfrat does not deter him. One pf; this impudent class^of Chow, named 'Mow Lee, a greengrocer and fruiterer, of Pirie-street, came before Dr. McArthur, S.M., at the Wellingtqn S.M.s Cpurt on Monday lasb. His offence; to which he pleaded guil-ty,-was that he did not keep his shop, closed between the hours of 1 p.m.' and i\ a.m. on June 5-6, which was the l< Wednesday half-holiday." Inspector Lindsay said that on the afternoon m- question Mow Lee, shut up his shop all right, but did a roar:ing trade out m his back yard. He had once before been convicted 'of an offence under the Act, but he, would not be deterred, and cheerfully kept on sel'ing during prohibited hours. On the Wednesday after he had reeiVed the summons m the present case he had traded out m the back yard. The Inspector therefore thought that a heavy penalty should be -inflicted. Dr. McArthur : This man is evidently under' the impression that if he is brought up once and fined he will not be interfered with for another six months. He hopes no doubt that by selling he will make up the fine. Inspector Lindsay : It is not fair toother tradespeople. Dr. McArthur inflicted a .fine' of £5 and costs.
