Ih, six "sides"- of "copy" our old ' •friend J. F. Burke, poet afcd , philoscn ptter:, tells us of the 'glories/of a ball held at Taihape on Friday; week, and after the usual compliments' to the organisers, caterer and officials and the inevitable "remarks upon* the - groans, of the. unfortunate table, he proceeds to state his firm opinion that the belle of the ball was a young ■lady from Mangaweka, whose name he failed to ascertain (slowcoach that he* is 1 !) but whom, he thus describes:' ' "She is tall, of .queenly figure and carriage, lily-white complexion, verysmall feet and small handjs, long? taper fingers, giving one the impres-] si on of constant use at the piano-^ forte, nice rounded waist, violet eyes-/; and lovely flaxen hair ; dressed m the? top-notch of perfection, her laughter^ oh, Heavens, so soul-entrancing, so| musical, like the blending or ten? Aeolian harps, or the tinkling of fairy bells." ; '', . / { Mr Burkes description of this Love-f ly Being's costume is vague, very] ?' Truth" never saw a lady dressed m? a top-notch of any kind, though it i^ not ignorant of the appearance of thej Fair Creatures m. merely a tpp-knoti But, stay, perhaps. he means ''to" the top-notch of perfection. Yes, that is probably the solution of this mystery^ of the toilet. Anyhow, let's see j how do 'the trains run to Taihape,? , :-■ i ■
