RHINELAND EVACUATION

(Received January 20 , 9.40 p.m.) PARIS, January 19. M. Briand, in the Chamber, delivered an anxiously-awaited statement on foreign affairs. He outlined at length the policy followed at Locarno, Geneva, and Thoiry. He also protested against the campaign of those on the Right who had represented him as being in conflict with his colleagues in the Cabinet on the subject of the Rhineland evacuation. It was Germany’s right, as the result of the treaty, to raise the question of evacuation as soon as she had . fulfilled her obligations aB regards reparations security, and if Germany made such an overture the Council of Ministers would be informed. M. Briand added that lie hoped that agreement would he reached before
February Ist regarding Germany’s Eastern fortifications. Negotiations would shortly he opened with Spain on the subject of Tangier. Touching on China, M. Briand said that the Government would pursue a policy of vigilance and prudence.
