DROWNED IN THE SURF
UNHEEDED WARNING TWO PERSONS LOSE THEIR LIVES. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 20. Tlie Greennieadows beacli at Opunake was tile scene of a surf tragedy ( this evening, Alary Doreen' Hammond, aged 2<j years of age, and Thomas Pennington, 28 years of age, both of Mangatoki, being drowne. The girl called at a batch on the beach; and asked lor a rope and belt as she was going to be taught to swim, swim. She was warned by Air N. R. McKcnzie (New Plymouth) that the sea was dangerous, and advised a swim in the river, but tlie girl said she liked the sea. The couple were' seen to go into the sea, but were present missd. Mr McKenzie immediately rang the Opunake Life-saving Club, half a mile away, and in twenty minutes the team was on the spot. The body of tlie girl was found floating on the surface, and the efforts of a doctor' for half an hour failed to revive any sign of life. Men were patrolling the beach tonight, but at a late hour there was no trace of the man’s body. In the commendable rescue attempt a member of the surf team, George Mayor, got Into difficulties, but was brought ashore by his brother Jack.
